I love these short videos that give insight into a single painting. In this case it’s Daniel Ralston, the National Gallery’s Acting Associate Curator of 1600-1800 Paintings, talking about Caravaggio.

Step into the world of Baroque art as he delves into the secrets of Caravaggio’s “The Supper at Emmaus”. This exclusive film offers a unique opportunity to uncover the layers of artistry, symbolism, and historical context of this mesmerising work. The painting, created in 1601, portrays a pivotal moment in the Bible, captured with Caravaggio’s distinct style of dramatic lighting and keen eye for detail.

Daniel Sobrino Ralston is the Acting Associate Curator of 1600-1800 Paintings at the National Gallery in London. An art historian and curator, he has published and lectured widely on Spanish art, with a special focus on the 19th century. In 2019, he curated ‘Sorolla in the Studio’, a fascinating exhibition from the Meadows Museum that explored the working methods of the painter Joaquin Sorolla.

This film is available to members of the National Gallery only but becoming a member is easy-peasy, not very expensive, and well worth it for all the perks that come with membership. Check it out.
