Sudden death of noted German tenor, 67
RIPThe distinguished Leipzig tenor Martin Petzold, renowned for Bach and Wagner interpretations, died on Tuesday night of an unknown cause.
He took part in more than 100 Matthew Passions and sang the Evangelist 300 times in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. At Leipzig Opera he sang 80 roles over almost four decades.
As a boy Petzold sang in the Thomanerchor. His conscientious objection to military service in East Germany, led to a temporary block being placed on his higher music education. He eventually consented to join the army for 18 months without bearing arms.
