Ruth Leon recommends… Miscast 2023
Ruth Leon recommendsMiscast 2023
I know I tell you about this every year but my excuse is that each show is different and usually well worth watching.
Miscast is the show where top Broadway musical stars choose a song from a musical in which they would never be cast – wrong gender, wrong vocal range, wrong physique, wrong type – and sing it live in concert in New York.
Here are Tony Award-winners, Tony nominees, Golden Globe winners and they’re all, or nearly all, currently appearing in a hit musical on Broadway, just not the musical from which they’ve chosen their song. These choices are often hilarious – I remember a particularly funny one when Met Opera leading lady Kelli O’Hara sang a rude country and western song which brought the house down.
This year’s performers include Annaleigh Ashford (currently Mrs Lovat in Sweeney Todd), Tony nominee Denée Benton (Into the Woods), Lorna Courtney (starring in & Juliet), Tony winner André De Shields (Hadestown), Tony nominee Josh Groban (the title role in Sweeney Todd), Tony winner LaChanze (Trouble in Mind, The Color Purple), Bonnie Milligan (an amazing comedy actress in Kimberly Akimbo), Tony winner Ben Platt (leading man in Parade), Eleri Ward (A Perfect Little Death, Only Gold), Jordan E. Cooper (Ain’t No Mo’), Jordan Donica (starring in Camelot), Jose Llana (Here Lies Love), Dylan Mulvaney (Day 365 Live!), NaTasha Yvette Williams (brilliant in Some Like It Hot), and Golden Globe winner Rachel Zegler (West Side Story).
The League of Live Stream Theater will broadcast Miscast23 April 10 and then available on demand until April 16.
Mrs Leon might have mentioned that is costs $45 to watch it online.
It’s a fundraiser for related projects.
$45 is hardly generous.
