Austrian star scraps Met season
OperaDays after the season announcement, the Austrian bass Günther Groissböck explains why he won’t be appearing at the Met in 2023-24:
It‘s always a bit disappointing when the new season is announced and you are not part of the roster BUT it was my decision to stay a bit more in Europe with my family👨👩👧😍in 2023/24. It’s definitely the darkest side of our „job“(it’s of course much more than this word can express!) to be often far away from home for such long periods and I am so grateful and happy that #petergelb and the @metopera generously released me from my contracts next season with 2 productions that I really loved but where I already appeared in 2015 #tannhäuser and in 2010 #laboheme!

Are you including the two million illegal immigrants and the one million legal immigrants who entered the US last year? An international survey indicated several hundred million people around the world want to immigrate to the US.
HE personally just had to MAKE sure we all knew he was invited and passed because of family — he needs a PR person, badly.
I’m glad he gave us the update. Frankly, I was wondering why the lack of established male stars in the classic repertory at the Met next season.

Considering how he sang in Lohengrin at the MET yesterday, there is nothing to regret.
Isn’t “wanting to spend more time with family” the usual excuse given by politicians who resign in the wake of breaking scandal?
His roles in Tannhauser and Boheme are hardly worth his while taking that much time away from home.
Why did he wait until immediately AFTER the season was announced? Answer: So we’d all know how in demand he is. The egos of the opera world never cease to amaze. P.S. I’m disappointed the posters on this site haven’t yet found a way to blame Gelb for this.
