The art of Pierre Boulez is up for auction
NewsSeven and a half years after his death, the arts works owned by Pierre Boulez will come up for sale this summer at the French auction house Artcurial.
Objects include pieces by Paul Klee (€50-70,000 estimate), Maria Hélena Vieira Da Silva (€8,000-60,000), a portrait of Stravinsky by Alberto Giacometti (€30-40,000) and varied pieces by Jean Cocteau, Philip Guston and Jean Tinguely.
I seem to recall that Boulez wrote an article on the art of Paul Klee. Boulez: ever the modernist.
Man of great taste for sure. His Mahler cycle still has some of the best cover art ever hit the market
Boulez collected Jean Cocteau?
It must have been a piece given to him and he was too polite to refuse.
But you never know, people’s personal aesthetics, afterall he did choose Patrice Chereau for his Bayreuth Ring.
Don’t let Boulez’s austere modernist public persona fool you, afterall he did live in a “pink sandstone mansion … back to 1897…built in a stately neo-Gothic style … entering its long twilight as a grand European resort.”

Who are the heirs of Boulez? I think close to nothing has ever leaked about his private life.
He had a brother and sister and several nephews and nieces. -a very private man, and why shouldn’t he have been that?
If want to be remembered as an influential classic modernist you need to surround yourself with paintings by Picasso and the original scores by Stravinsky.
Boulez’s remaining blank manuscript paper is worth more* than his catalogue…(*long-term)
Boulez’s 100th anniversary will soon be coming up. Brace yourselves!
