Breaking: Barenboim returns to La Scala
OrchestrasWe were notified this morning that Daniel Barenboim will conduct Mozart Symphonies 39, 40 and 41 at La Scala on February 15, 16 and 18.
It will be his first time conducting the orchestra in seven years.
He replaces Daniel Harding, who has flown off to deal with a family issue.
Why dear Daniel?! He struggled so much to get through the Beethoven 9 at New Years in Berlin. Even though it was a piece he knows so well and an orchestra that knows him intimately for 30 years, it was still a very difficult, and physical undertaking. Why does he want to keep going?!
Because music is his drug.
Money
When you’re used to get applause 200 nights a year, maybe more, adoration all over the world, great hotels, first class travel, well you probably never want this to end….Zubin has same issue, it’s more about ego than money, they were millionaires a long time ago…. And even more refusal to die….it’s better to take everything in this life, they might not get as much in next one….
So what else should he do – take up knitting? These guys don’t plan for retirement…
Colin Davis, for one, was a great knitter!
The agents confused Daniele with Daniel.
He will not go gentle into that dark night. The music builds him as it did for Claudio Abbado
Great to read this, but is he up to it?
Bravo Bravissimo Maestro! ¡Mucha salud!
girl……
all power to him but it’s a great physical undertaking, even if they are pieces he knows
Conductors like Gunther Wand and Otto Klemperer got through excellent concerts with minimum gestures. It’s not necessarily a great physical undertaking.
You can do it with a wink and a kick
He gets a chance to perform with an extraordinary orchestra in a monumental venue. My dream as a conductor is to croak conducting Wagner on the podium. A soldier’s way to go!
Still an easier gig than this

More power to your elbow, DB.
Remove music from this man’s life and you remove him. He’s a force of nature.
Unfortunately, it is more and more looks like the last tour.
For those who he say ‘he’s not up to it’, I’m hoping you’re wrong for Barenboim’s sake. The good news is that he won’t really need to swing his arms all about, and be dramatically demonstrative for Mozart symphonies. A certain restraint and elegance can work just fine. I’m sure the musicians will be most respectful and give their best. Good luck Daniel Barenboim.
Seems the conducting world is currently revolving and twisting, shifting conducting responsibilities, disappointing patrons (or v.v.), disorienting singers et al, all in order to accommodate Barenboim. How much of this before it becomes excessive? They may just need to CANCEL something. Then we’d have Rustioni back in London for Don Carlo in July.
He’s a great one. Please take it easy since age has caught up with you.
The orchestra could probably play those Mozart pieces without a conductor.
Why don’t they make a gala show out of it?
“Barenboim and friends”
Provided there are any left.
No one seems to enjoy the irony, Dany replacing conductor half his age, pilot replaced by automatic pilot….
