The Deutsche Oper has chosen Aviel Cahn, General Manager of the Grand Théâtre de Genève, to succeed Dietmar Schwarz in 2025.

Cahn, 48, has a varied background.

He has worked with the China National Symphony Orchestra in Beijing, Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, Stadttheater Bern and Opera Vlaanderen in Antwerp.

    Good for them

  • Clem says:

He did a great job in Opera Flanders (Antwerp / Ghent). It was a provincial house when he started and presented award-winning productions and attracted great directors during the last years of his term. The Deutsche Opera Berlin is a wonderful place but it needs a creative shake-up. Cahn might be the right person to do that.

      A few highlights –
„Not only sex is fun, opera goes deeper“
“younger, more diverse, more cross-sectoral and more political”
      I’m missing Dietmar already.

  • AB says:

Very interesting, what would be Mr. Cahn’s plan.
DOB needs reform and new profile. A new face and new profile of the music director is necessary.
Cahn was always faithful to his artistic vision but also adapted to the needs of the city – in Antwerp as well as in Geneva.
Berlin is challenging and not a self-runner. DOB is not a brand anymore. So, it is super interesting, what Cahn has to offer.

  • Rosa says:

Any chance of him bringing a new GMD? Seems like the even more important change!

    • AB says:

He will have too: Runnickles had been appointed for the period till 2027. So if I do the math right, Cahn and Runnickles have only one season together.

    • Alan says:

      Is Runnicles so unpopular?

      • Rosa says:

The orchestra sounds pretty bland when he conducts. In my memory it wasn’t this bad when he started, but the Wagner and Beethoven I heard him in as of late weren’t anything to write home about. Many people I know personally have also noticed it, in addition many critics have mentioned it as well recently.

  • Kati says:

We are sorry to lose him, but « onwards and upwards », so we wish him good luck And au revoir ( and NOT good bye!!)
