The Royal Opera House has made the necessary casting change for this summer’s Trovatore after the Azeri tenor said he would not sing without his banned wife, Anna Netrebko.

His part as Manrico will be taken by Riccardo Massi in Adele Thomas’s new production. Gregory Kunde will sing the secon half od the run, as scheduled.

London is unlikely to see the Netrebkos any time soon.

  • Alex says:

Well done Royal Opera ! Looks like
Eyvazov grossly overestimated Mr and Mrs Netrebko brand.

  • ls says:

Lucky London. New Yorkers are still scheduled to suffer through his lousy Cavaradossi this April.

    • Tristan says:

no loss at all as he never was among a great singer but honestly his wife has a great voice for a certain repertoire but she is just so much without style
The living Queen is Sondra Radvanovsky

    • Herr Doktor says:

The brand new Apple I-Earplug will be available in the Met’s lobby. It is designed to completely block out the user’s ability to hear whatever singer they want blocked. Interestingly enough, on the companion app, Yusef Eyvazov is the first name that comes up in the pull-down menu. That menu must have been determined by frequency of user choice.

  • kaa12840 says:

English hypocrisy at its worst; not that anyone is surprised

    • Anthony Sayer says:

      Least of all this Englishman.

    • ls says:

Why? Eyvasov says he himself withdrew due to a scheduling conflict with his La Scala contract.

      • JJ says:

If it’s true and he didn’t say this just to save face, the fact that he had himself booked at the same time for two different runs, in two different opera houses half a continent apart, is a matter of small importance. Don’t look the gift horse in the mouth. He and the bleating vocal production he calls singing are both out, and this is all that matters. Lucky ROH.

  • EM says:

Meanwhile, Verona is opening the 100 th festival with “the golden couple of opera” as one site describes them, praising Eyvazov’s Radames…
Oh, those italians…you would expect them to appreciate the good voices….

  • Potpourri says:

An almost identical article with a similar photo appeared in Slipped Disc on November 28, 2022. It would be difficult for Anna Netrebko to appear in Il Trovatore because she will be starring in Macbeth at La Scala in June-July. I understand your motive: news about Anna Netrebko always gets clicks.

    • JJ says:

Yes Potpourri, she is clickbait, and you are seemingly the best proof Norman’s strategy works. You obviously keep track of all AN posts on this blog, with date, photo, and all necessary details needed to compare posts. Extraordinary! Now this is what I call dedication to the cause. I’m sure Norman is grateful for the extra revenue you’re bringing him. Out of curiosity, is there an AN post you have missed?

  • Phillip says:

He is a joke, a third rate artist. The only reason opera houses engaged him was tĂ´ please his wife. Eyvazov is something like a “everything-wrong” singer. Wrong emission, wrong intonation, wrong pitch. A disaster. Nobody will miss him.

  • Ernest says:

    It’s an improvement!

  • MMcGrath says:

One mediocre voice less at the ROH. Thanks, Joe.

  • Tom Phillips says:

If only there were a quality ARMENIAN tenor to replace him (nothing against Massi however). Anyway London lucked out – wish the same were true of any of Mr. Netrebko’s upcoming New York engagements.

  • Roland says:

It’s a shame Alte Oper Frankfurt and Festspielhaus Baden-Baden have been nvited them. These highly acclaimed houses have sold their soul. They take the money and give racism and supporters of the dictatorships in Russia and Azerbaidjan a stage. Bravo Covent Garden! Shame on Alte Oper and Festspielhaus! You have lost my respect and you will lose my money for concert tickets!

  • David Costa says:

I’m just back from Verona, where Yusif and Anna sang a beautiful Aida. Both were terrific. I’m ashamed and appalled to read some “I know everything” comments here. I wasn’t aware that the true opera connoisseurs were from the UK. Oh well, enjoy what suits you best. The 10,000 at the Arena were well happy.
