The German pianist has been given a mini-festival to curate in Lucerne this May.

He has chosen to share it with four colleagues: Alexei Volodin, Anna Vinnitskaya, Fred Hersch and Johanna Summer.

Cool.

He’s definitely one of mine. He’s an extraordinary artist.

  • Gustavo says:

He looks like a Marvel super hero on that photo.

  • Tristan says:

Bravo giving the youngsters a chance!!! We need refreshments unlike awful Pereira does in Firenze or overrated Hinterhäuser in Salzburg this summer – absolutely awful

    • Tamino says:

      „Refreshments“?
No thanks. I seek artistic challenges and interesting human beings. Refreshments are welcome in the intermission.
And am again reminded of the universal saying:
„There are two kinds of fools. Those who say something is new and therefor better, and those who say something old and therefor better“.

Things we consider “great” now, such as works of Van Gogh, Monet, Bach etc, were not considered so great during their time. Those who were deemed great in their time, such as Hummel, Cabanel, etc. are now much less appreciated. It is therefore a sign of the real fool to think he/she can determine what is good irrespective of context.

Giving youth, and others who you don’t necessarily understand, a chance to develop and display their works is an opportunity for humans to collectively develop new appreciation for things they are not used to. We should be humble of our limitations, be less judgmental, and welcome things we do not understand as refreshing, indeed. We may end up never liking it, or it may never be considered great in human history, but this process should be appreciated.

I think the real difference is not going for the usual suspects.

The only youngster is Johanna Summer, born in 1995. The others are older than Levitt.

I can tell you ( should you be in the least bit interested to know, which I doubt), who is NOT one of my favourite pianists, and it is…. Levit . Why can this man not keep his big, and neither musical nor very intelligent, mouth shut ?
