Irony fails at Arts Council England
NewsAn hour after Glyndebourne said it could not afford to continue touring eastern England because of a 50% cut in its ACE grant, Arts Council England tweeted the following:
Do you want to influence how the Arts Council supports artists, organisations and culture in your region?
Here are two previous tweets:
Travel and touring are essential to creativity and culture, but they come at a cost.
And:
Do you believe in the power of music? We want to hear from you!
This organisation is delusional.
you could not make it up
Not a fan of her at all but it was interesting to see Nadine Dorries have a go at ACE on Twitter. https://twitter.com/NadineDorries/status/1611299727357759488
Mr.Lebrecht is quite right
Which reasonable observer could have expected that the Arts Council could have, on the one hand, proclaimed their wish to extend the performing arts outside London whilst, on the other hand, reducing the subsidies to Glyndebourne and Welsh National Opera that made their tours possible?
As Glyndebourne points out, the Festival subsidised the Tour already. Did ACE consider (care) that reducing the grant made the Tour unaffordable? And after three difficult seasons for the performing arts.
One also has to wonder if anyone in the government, which is ACE’s political master, knows and approves of this
American here, so I have only a basic understanding of what ACE does, but…… If an organization called “ARTS” Council England doesn’t give money to a great British ARTS institution like Glyndebourne, WHAT are they giving it to??
