Vienna cancels live stream as star falls sick

A withdrawal by Juan Diego Florez from La Fille du régiment prompted the Vienna State Opera to scrap tonight’s live stream.

Florez is being substituted by an untested Italian tenor Marco Ciaponi (pictured). However, due to the late change and ‘insufficient preparation time’ the stream has been cancelled. Instead, Vienna has inserted into its stream list a previously unseen house recording of La bohème with Anna Netrebko, Vittorio Grigolo and others less controversial.

You lose some, you win some.

Untested? From the top of my head he has sung in major Italian theaters and abroad too

  • Alviano says:

Poor Marco. Not exactly a vote of confidence.

The replacement performance inserted in the stream list is Die Fledermaus, not a “previously unseen house recording of La bohème with Anna Netrebko, Vittorio Grigolo.” There isn’t a previously unseen La Bohème recording, we all had occasion to watch when it was streamed in September this year. If you mean the second performance of the run (there were only two performances), I don’t think we need a repeat of Grigolo’s seizure dynamics, or of AN singing off pitch most of the time, that was truly brutal, I don’t think I have ever witnessed a singer straying from pitch with such abandon for such long periods of time, with perhaps the exception of the very same AN in the ROH Forza three years ago, but I wouldn’t swear to it.

Marco is an amazing singer ! So happy he is getting a debut in Vienna . Deserved

  • Robert Ireland says:

Why the allusion to the controversy? Ridiculous.

JDF was an amazing Tonio, but can he still handle that D flat in act 2?
