The impulsive Hungarian pianist has pulled out of six Schumann concerto dates this month with the Israel Philharmonic.

Matan Porat will deputise on November 20, 21, 23, 26, 27 and 28, in Tel-Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa.

Schiff was also meant to be conducting Brahms first symphony in the second half. The French baton Alexandre Block is being flown in as substitute.

  • Alexander says:

Impulsive? Have you ever heart him? His interpretations put everything in complete boring harmony. He is not emotional, not impulsive. He is conservative as an artist and in general. So what? He cancelled concerts, and?

  • Anton Bruckner says:

They should have changed the program. Again a Brahms symphony? Again the Schumann concerto? Every year the same work? With all due respect to Andras Schiff – such repertoire is not justified even when he is the soloist and conductor.

    • Peter X says:

Exactly. This kind of program isn’t worth the price of a ticket. Possibly he is too old for Bartok, but Haydn or Mozart…?Dohnányi…?

  • Kenny says:

Terrible program in the first place. But typical of IPO to salvage it somehow.

  • Doug Grant says:

    Maybe he’s just sick

  • Michal Kaznowski says:

Is there a story here ?

  • BH says:

Schiff is now touring in Japan. He doesn’t open the programme beforehand; instead he announces it on the stage according to his spontaneous feelings in that evening. Average length of the recent recitals in Japan is about 3.5 hours, so he must not have any health problems.

As the reason for not deciding the programme in advance, he says he cannot decide the menu of dinner that he will eat one year later. Maybe he realised that he doesn’t have an appetite for Schumann’s concerto this month.

  • GUEST says:

If one has ever watched Sir Andras give a lecture-recital or masterclass, his manner of speech (and generally his playing) is deliberate, measured, rational and the very definition of not-impulsive.

  • Giora says:

Some people here don’t understand the extremely high value of this artist and his profound, noble, refined and sense of humor enlightened interpretations. Who are you to be so negative concerning an artist? Another keyboard champion? But computer’s keyboard of course!! By the way he is a very fine interpreter of Bartok’s concertos..

  • deN Roarem says:

What is this supposed to signify, if anything? You seem to be suggesting something, but what? I find him boring and unmusical.

  • Joe P says:

It takes subtlety of hearing and understanding of his musicality to appreciate Andras – when one gets there, he can be the most compelling artist imaginable.

  • Dr N says:

Well, maybe is cancellation is simply a reaction and silent comment to the deeply shocking political situation in Israel.

  • Piano Lover says:

    SCHiff conductor?
    More boredom ahead.
    We can do without him.
Let him live with his Bach-athletic-event!
