We wish Grace a full and swift recovery.

Press release:

On Thursday, October 20th, 2022, our beloved family member Grace Melzia Bumbry of St. Louis, Missouri, suffered an acute ischemic stroke. The renowned American opera star is currently hospitalized and in recovery in Queens, New York. U.S.A. Following Grace’s successful recanalization procedure, her neurosurgeon, Dr. Moshen Nouri, sent the following message:
Dear Mr. Brewer
Based on the MRI results, the stroke is not extensive but it has affected areas in the brain responsible for comprehension and language. Obviously there are hopes for recovery but, especially considering her age, the extent and timing of rehabilitation could not be predicted and may require weeks to months.
I would be happy to help if there are further questions,
Best,
Mohsen Nouri
Under Dr. Nouri’s supervision, Grace is receiving excellent care and attention from her medical team. If you know Grace Melzia Bumbry, you know that she is a fighter. She is listening to music and is increasingly able to understand and respond to spoken communication. She knows that her friends, family, and fans are praying for her and responded with emotion when I relayed every message that has already arrived.
Her family appreciates each inquiry and asks for your continued and uplifting prayers.
Please send cards and letters of encouragement to
Grace Melzia Bumbry

Please DO NOT SEND PICTURES for autograph.”

Oh, the autograph hunters are the worst. I remember seeing some idiot at a London concert go up to Jaqueline du Pre sitting up in her wheelchair in the most advanced stages of MS – barely able to move a muscle. And wanting a signature from her.

Artur Rubinstein apparently once said to an autograph seeker “..sorry, I only sign cheques”

Oh, no…. the lovely and dear Grace Bumbry….
One of the greatest of American singers!

Saw her years ago at Covent Garden in London and never forgot it.

Here’s a lovely interview between Grace and the former WNIB presenter, Bruce Duffie, done some years ago.

We were also blessed last year during the pandemic when the Wagner Society of London treated us all to a live interview on Zoom from her home in Austria. What an artist.

  • HELEN KAMIONER says:

Blessings to you Ms. Bumbry for introducing me to German Lieder. I wish you a strong, speedy recovery.
