France to increase arts subsidy by 7%
NewsWhile England expects deep cuts in the coming Arts Council round, the French government is going for growth with 7 percent increase in the culture budget to 4.2 billion euros. That’s an extra 271 million euros next year.
Most of it will go to financing cinema and audiovisual productions, says the French Ministry of Culture.
Given inflation is 5.8%, it’s really an increase of 1.2%.
French cinema (which necessarily includes streaming series in the 21st century) is far from the golden age of French cinema, while other countries are making leaps and bounds ahead.
It’s very easy to conplain and to be ironic about the French strategy concerning art subsidy but it’s a fact that Paris managed well the last years with the new Philarmonie and the comings in town of Mäkelä and Dudamel who are success. In London there’s always the ugly Barbican, Rattle left and the LSO still don’t have this great concert hall the orchestra deserves.
England is probably the worst place in Western Europe at the moment.
Not Scotland then?
The drug problems alone are shocking.
Well, to be fair they’ve got their wretched “sov’rinty” but sadly still no fish!
Waiting to see how the usual French bashers try to spin this in a negative light!
