The ambitious 2016 Mahler competition winner Kahchun Wong has quit the boutique agency that launched his career and joined Jasper Parrott’s big bunch of batons.

Kahchun, 35, lost his job in Nuremburg at the first hurdle, but he’s about to become chief conductor of the Japan Philharmonic and focus-artist at the Dresden Philharmonie.

What exactly is a “boutique” agency?
    Serious question.

Where you buy decorative things, like in a boutique (a small shop where fashionable items are sold).

    • Insider says:

A boutique agency is a marketing term for a start up agency that promises its artists a close and attentive relationship. They promise not to represent a huge roster but that you are the special one they’ll take care of, only to end up a year later with a roster of 25 conductors, of which only 5 or so get regular work and the others go looking elsewhere for that what they were promised.

Japan might take a liking to his cute little gesticulations when conducting (we remember his ridiculous video from Nuremburg).
And what in god’s name is a “focus artist” other than a curiosity brought in to brighten up a certain local blandness?

  • Conductor Man says:

If you want to see why many young conductors should not be in front of a professional orchestra, watch Kman’s video. It was only a show. NO DEPTH!!
