Bayreuth tenor dies, 74
RIPThe tenor Peter Maus, a member of Deutsche Oper Berlin from 1974 to 2013, has died after a short illness.
Born in Bayreuth, he was a regular performer at the summer festival from 1982 to 2002.
He sang more than 100 roles in 70 operas, including modernities by Reimann, Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Rihm.
He first sang in Bayreuth in 1972! In a production of Das Liebesverbot as part of the summer Jugendfestspieltreffen! There is an LP recording somewhere……..
I think he and Ralf Lukas were the only two Bayreuth natives to sing at the Festspiele, but I could be wrong. Funnily enough, I though of him this afternoon when I saw a car registered MA-US *** in the car park. He’s something of a legend on the Green Hill.
Oh, he must be the one they censored in Tennessee.
