Whimsical title, and lovely photo, of Gould with a moustache! (Another “first seen
on Slipped Disc.) Thanks. Definitely made my day.

  • David K. Nelson says:

“Fine but choppy way of playing, and no legato.”

  • Ludwig's Van says:

Gould’s Mozart Sonatas recordings are a crime against music.

    Gorgeous

The headline and caption make me think that I was “supposed to” hate or laugh at this. Actually, I thought it was pretty good. Sure the Fantasia was a little slower than I like and the 16th note triplets in the fantasia were often more staccato than I like, but nothing seemed grotesque. Maybe it helps that I find it an interesting piece to listen to and a fun piece to play (especially all the crunches in the fugue).

    Absolutely stunning performance!!!

When I was in college, I performed in a Master Class with Mr. Gould. He was absolutely awful. I think back on the way he treated the male participants and the way he treated me…making me play the same phrase over and over but never quite telling me what he wanted was the worst learning experience I had as a student. All I learned that day was what the word “misogyny” meant. Luckily other workshops I participated in were wonderful experiences. As for his playing, meh. Nothing special.
