Vienna goes French for summer’s night concert
NewsThe Vienna Philharmonic have enigmatically picked the French cellist Gautier Capucon as soloist for their midsummer bash.
Press release:
‘After two years of pandemic, the Vienna Philharmonic is very pleased that the Summer Night Concert 2022 can once again take place before a large audience in the Schönbrunn Palace Park. This year we have chosen a European musical program that emphasizes our common European musical heritage with its diverse facets and rich musical traditions. The concert will be conducted for the first time by Maestro Andris Nelsons. The soloist on the evening’s program will be the French cellist Gautier Capuçon, who will also be appearing at the Summer Night Concert for the first time,’ says Daniel Froschauer, Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic.
It’s not the first time that for this concert (I like very much) we have french soloists. Few years ago there were for this event the Labèque sisters. I don’t think (and i’am not sure) that Georges Pretre did this special summer concert like he did the Waldbühne one with the BPO.
Pretre had a great Indian summer.
The Waldbühne concert he did (it was the first one in 1992) in a french programm was fantastic. One of the best outdoor concert I have ever seen.
“Indian summer” is now considered derogatory to Native Americans.
The irony in this is, that the Native Americans do not care much about this. Some woke white people though, in lack of real existential challenges, try to “change the world”, one irrelevant storm in the teapot after the other. Misery. Instead they could do something relevant. What a waste.
YES! His ‘Pelleas’ at the Opera Comique was wonderful….and his New Year’s VPO concerts very special.
If you are going to say the choice is enigmatic, then perhaps you should elaborate a bit.
Enigmatically?
They’re playing the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto no.1. They needed a soloist, so they hired one. It happens all the time. What do you find so baffling, Norman?
What is so “enigmatic” about one of the best orchestras featuring one of the best cellists? Or programming the concerto by Saint-Saëns, for that matter?
So much worrying about what nation someone comes from.
Three of the five commenters so far are jumping right over the stick that the owner of this blog is holding out to us. He uses a word that incites and upsets you. After all, he knows himself that neither the repertoire nor the soloist, nor the selection of both is “enigmatic”. He just likes to provoke and is very successful at it. So my advice is: don’t fall for this cheap trick.
