Another conductor resigns in Russia
NewsThe Russian-born Thomas Sanderling has resigned as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra over the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
Sanderling, son of the veteran Leningrad Philharmoninc conductor, said: ‘Following the recent aggression of Russia on Ukraine, and especially the violent bombing of Ukrainian cities and growth of totalitarianism in Russia I unfortunately felt to resign from the position of the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra with immediate effect. This decision has been very painful for me, as I was born in Novosibirsk and felt a strong relation with the Orchestra.’
He honors his father with this action.

This name has brought up memories. When I worked for the Philharmonia we were warned – by we I mean the concerts department who were mostly women in their twenties and thirties – that he would call regularly and want to speak for a long time if the person who answered was a young woman, including making suggestive remarks. We were just told to pass the call to the one male member of the department to deal with rather than his behaviour being challenged. Funny to find out he has principles regarding some things.
This happened in the last decade by the way, in case anyone’s thinking ‘times were different then’.
