Death of a much-recorded concertmaster, 74
RIPThe death has been reported of András Ágoston, concertmaster of the Philharmonia Hungarica, an orchestra of exiles which recorded copiously for Decca.
A refugee from Hungarian Communism, he lived in the German town of Marl.
He was born in 1947 in Cluj-Napoca (called Kolozsvár in Hungarian; Agoston was an ethnic Hungarian), capital city of Transylvania, and graduated from the city’s conservatory in 1972, winning first prize in the Vienna David Oistrakh competition the same year. He joined the conservatory’s faculty and remained there, while also concertizing in Europe, until becoming concertmaster of the Philharmonia Hungarica in 1991. Thus, he was not a “refugee from Hungarian Communism” himself, although the orchestra had been founded by refugees in 1956.
