There has been an outpouring of sorrow for the sudden death of Andrew Sinclair, staff director at Covent Garden from 1994 to 2019 and in demand in many houses around the world.

Among other important revivals he was entrusted with Zeffirelli’s Tosca and works by Goetz Friedrich, Harry Kupfer and Elijah Moshinsky.

The conductor Karen Kamensek writes: ‘I am beyond sad and shattered to learn of the tragic and shocking passing of one of the greatest colleagues and human beings I have ever had the pleasure of working with and knowing.’

Conductor Sebastian Lang-Lessing: ‘Dearest Andrew ! I can’t express how much I miss you! You enriched so many of us through your artistry, kindness and amazing sense of humor!’

Director John Copley: ‘I am sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Andrew Sinclair. We worked together for decades in both his native Australia and here in London. He has been one of the people most often tasked with maintaing my productions when I was elsewhere and it was due to his skill that they stayed as fresh as they did.

Andrew’s passing is a loss to the operatic world and I am sending much love to his friends and colleagues who are as surprised and as saddened as I am.’

Soprano Nelly Miricoiu-Kirk: ‘I will cherish our moments together, your laughter, sense of humour, your optimism and constant encouragement for each artist around. You shared your talent and knowledge with generosity without hesitation, and delighted in seeing those you worked with succeed. ‘

A sensational person, a talented director with a lovely sense of humour. I was his assistant director when we took Elijah Moshinski’s Lohengrin production to the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. I will never forget how good and patient he was and how much we enjoyed it all.
    A very very sad loss.

  • David Lloyd says:

I knew Andrew many years ago in London. Talented , witty , kind. I wish I’d known him better.

  • Crispin says:

Andrew: a kind, generous, creative man. Deepest condolences to Scott.
