New York seeks professor of music theory and race
NewsThis new advertisement is the latest advance in the discipline of musicology.
Posted September 1, 2021:
The Department of Music at Columbia University invites applications for a full-time, tenure track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialization in Music Theory and Race, which may include a scholarly emphasis on critical race theory, historical perspectives on race and music theory, or other issues of race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity as they pertain to music theory and analysis. The successful candidate must have a completed PhD or DMA by June 30, 2022, the time of appointment.
So encouraging division and general sh*t stirring is now an academic discipline?
Outstanding.
It is Columbia University, what else would you expect? They hired the convicted terrorist, Kathy Boudin as an assistant professor. In the demented minds of modern academia , one gets hired after murdering an innocent guard but fired for offending the sensibility of some 20 year old brainwashed Maoist. And one gets the pleasure of spending $75 k a year for sending your kid to that institution. The WSJ just published a expose on how the CU suckers MFA students in Film studies to get in debt up to $300,000 for the privilege of studying at a great program. The median salary after 2 years was 50K. The university admitted they use these graduate students to subsidize undergraduates. It is also clear they are counting on the Federal government to forgive these loans. American Universities are the moral equivalent of the most corrupt private corporations in existence But they have the best PR. With the exception of STEM education most of them should be defunded. Nothing but a Ponzi scheme with the added “benefit” that they turn out brainwashed miseducated and unproductive graduates who would be better off had they gone to vocational school
Amusing that liberals like this are compelled to create sanctimonious positions like this yet still openly support CAPITALISM, isn’t it?? LOL!
How much do these cretins continue to CHARGE students??
AhHa!!

So much for equal opportunities for ‘everyone’. They even rely on TESTS to get in created by white folks which are used to openly SEGREGATE candidates!! Then they expect money to be paid for services rendered…WOW! Not even “full scholarships for all” or “free-tuition” in the name of their utopian social equity/equality model.
NO!!! Columbia U. and the lot are all for-profit businesses expecting money from these angry grads who rarely land real jobs in their fields post graduation. Most continue to “boomerang” back home lucky to get a minimum wage job upon return. No wonder most protest, riot and require psych meds. Old Joe Biden LET THEM DOWN too! What’s left?? Streetwalking for all apparently.
Well at least they must be taught to cite their sources for data and facts. You’ve made extensive claims here yet cited zero credible data.
Has been for decades in American universities.
Anticipating the comments: I vividly remember the doom prophecies of the eighties. “Amusing ourselves to death” etc. It was crystal clear then that the problem weren’t the mass media per se, but the fact that they started to threaten the elevated position of high culture, or rather: the elevated position of its practitioners and its pundits. We’re 40 years later and high culture seems to be fine.
Now, there’s another movement threatening the position of the old guard. And of course, like 40 years ago, they don’t admit it’s just them who feel threatened, it’s Culture and Civiliation (of which the old guard is, of course, the incarnation and the last line of defense) which are supposed to be in mortal danger.
Move on, move on, nothing new to see here.
High culture, at least in the US, is not fine at all. As Alex Ross put it years ago, classical music is a “modest subculture.” Adam Kirsch’s recent article “Culture as counterculture” nails it: high culture is now countercultural. Pop culture rules. Believe me, I’m not happy about this.
First of all, that pop culture is dominant doesn’t imply that high culture isn’t doing well. You confirm my suspicion that it’s all about dominance, not about quality. Second: the problem with high culture in the USA isn’t the dominance of mass culture, but the absence of government funding, which has delivered high culture into the claws of donors. See the pathetically backward but outrageously expensive opera house called the Met. I can assure you that in “socialist Europe”, where I live, high culture, low culture and mass culture, and every possible combination of those, are doing fine.
One thing is for sure, whoever gets this job won’t get tenure, because in 7-10-15 years (or however long it takes to get tenure in the humanities these days), either the field will have moved on from Race Theory to some other Fad-Du-Jour (I predict “Smell Theory” how Beethoven smelled), or the department of music will have disappeared, absorped by some STEM program.
The question of how Beethoven smelled has been embarked upon already 3 years ago by the Music Faculty of the Texas Institute for Technology under the enlightened direction of Dr Hofstadter, but the outcome of the research, as was offered to the Musicological Quarterly, was not deemed appropriate for the musicological community. But a fragment of the paper has been leaked to the Stürmische Beobachter who revealed, in their Cultural Corner, that Germany’s greatest composer was revolutionary in more than a musical sense.
“Critica Smell Theory” sounds great!
🙂
…but as Hanslick might say, it stinks to the ear.
I suspect you are right, and the person appointed would be wise to range more broadly and develop other areas of expertise. But the US higher-ed system is full of one-subject experts and narrow specialists. Pity.
will be hired with tenure at a senior rank.
Ewell must be a shoo-in for this gig? Surprised they didn’t just appoint him straight of the bat.
They have to go through the motions of an “open search.”
at Psychiatric hospitals…
Ewell is a tenured Associate Professor, if that means anything to you.
Such outrageous nonsense.
