The pianist, 80 this year, is unwell.

There is no conceivable substitute, but they have made do.

(SF, 30 July 2021) The Salzburg Festival deeply regrets having to announce that Martha Argerich has been forced to cancel her soloist recital with Renaud Capuçon on Tuesday, 3 August at the Haus für Mozart, due to health reasons. The Festival would have been delighted to celebrate this great pianist’s 80th birthday with her in Salzburg.

The Salzburg Festival is very pleased to announce that Igor Levit has agreed to perform with Renaud Capuçon, replacing Martha Argerich.

  • Henry williams says:

One gets to her age group one can have health issues.
    We are all vulnerable.

  • GUEST says:

Guess this proves that no one is irreplaceable. BTW, what is a ‘soloist’s recital’ with another artist involved?

  • Stephen Lord says:

    Does ANYONE replace Martha?

  • Luba Kor says:

Martha, get well soon! We love you!!!

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

The trouble is that at 80 one seldom ‘gets well’. I remember moaning about age-related illnesses while I was in a private hospital waiting room recently and a man across from me shot back, “it doesn’t improve”!!

  • Susanna says:

She is always welcome and will be missed

Irreplaceable, but Igor’s a proper trooper.

I have almost F. music that has been recorded, but listening to it is often akin to self-harm…

    A sadness, on both counts.

  • Manuel says:

80 anos no es nada, febril la mirada te busca y te nombra…… debe ser un malestar no importante pero tiene que cuidarse. Se que pronto estara bien. La amo desde el primer dia que la vi y oi. Si ella supiera que existo!!

  • Betty from Yorkshire says:

Get well soon Martha. Take care

  • Sally Frise says:

Sincere good wishes to the wonderful Martha. Igor will not let you down. Much love. Sally Frise

  • TERESA A WELLS says:

Dear Martha- time to rest and relax and take good care of yourself. Maybe think about writing that memoir? Breathe…

  • Mary Levack says:

Since reading this announcement I have wept tears of deep sadness. This artist has more than paid her dues. She has no equal and yet she has continued to unstintingly serve the world from her place at the pinnacle of pianistic musicianship (et al) – humbly and graciously – for her near total lifetime. May she rest and recover completely knowing she is supported by the love and prayers of so-o-o many! Rest, and be blessed, Martha.
