The 19th-century Polish opera, The Haunted Manor by Stanislaw Moniuszko remains largely unknown abroad and Slippedisc offers a unique opportunity to view it.
Innovative director Ilaria Lanzino who taught herself Polish for this production, provides an intriguing video synopsis of the plot. Click below.
And for an even briefer version of the plot: after returning from the war, two brothers resolve never to marry so that they can serve their country. But they find their match when they meet two strong-willed sisters living in a mysterious manor.
I’ve seen a production of this opera in Lviv. Despite the fact that it was once a Polish city, knowledge of the Polish language obviously disappeared along with the Polish speakers, such that Straszny Dwór was interpreted as meaning Страшный Двор and translated into English as Frightful Courtyard. Which rather set the tone for evening. Nice music though.
Her Polish is not that good!
Maybe the brothers just aren’t into girls.
Achtung – Regiekonzept!
