Sad news: Canada mourns a formative music director, 71
NewsJeanne Lamon, foudner of the baroque ensemble Tafelmusik, died today in Victoria, aged 71.
She was the ensemble’s music diretor from from 1981 to 2014, earning Canada a place at the high table of period performance.
From the official cv:
Jeanne Lamon began to specialize in baroque violin in the early 1970s, during her studies in Amsterdam with Sigiswald Kuijken. In 1980, Lamon was invited to Toronto by Tafelmusik’s founders, Kenneth Solway and Susan Graves, and was appointed Music Director in 1981.
Before moving to Victoria with her partner, long-time Tafelmusik cellist Christina Mahler, Lamon was Artistic Director of the Health Arts Society of Ontario, an organization dedicated to providing seniors in long-term care and retirement homes with quality concerts.
A sad loss. RIP.
May she rest in peace. Her memory lives on and so, I hope, will her outstanding ensemble. The recordings will be a fitting memorial and will bring pleasure to music lovers for years to come.
Oh no!
Her recording of the cello concerti of Haydn and Krafft, with Anner Bylsma, is one of my all-time favorite recordings. RIP!
Jeanne was really special. Listen to her recordings and you constantly hear a probing for the music’s expressive potential over and above the groups consistently outstanding execution. Tafelmusik has and enjoys a remarkable place among the world’s elite period groups. Thankfully, Sony and Analekta recognized that.
Jeanne Lamon gave many concerts with Symphony Nova Scotia for many years, and was much loved by audiences and musicians alike. She will be sadly missed. RIP.
