To no great surprise, Sovrintendente Carlo Fuortes has appointed Michele Mariotti as music director of the Opera di Roma.

He starts in November 2022.

Daniele Gatti will leave Rome Opera later this year, with bigger prospects in sight (he has been seen lately in Florence).

Mariotti, 41, has been head of the Teatro Communale in Bologna since 2014.

Comune, one “m”, from Comune (townhall).

  • Sisko24 says:

So how does this opera house now rank internationally and within Italy? Are they as good as La Scala or is that a risible question? The last time I saw anything in print about them-four years ago-the article was all about opera house intrigue, backstabbing, subterfuge and general dysfunction which the author concluded made this house an unnecessarily poor one to perform in. Has that changed?

      Dear Sisko,
It’s an opera house, not the Wiener Sängerknaben.
      🙂 Pff

In Italy, La Scala is “the top”. And then places like Naples and (at least in the past) Venice are the next rank. Rome is a bit below that. It isn’t really clear that Rome would rank more highly or lowly than Florence or Bologna.
