The 2021 Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime cultural contributions have been awarded to Dick Van Dyke, Garth Brooks, Debbie Allen, Joan Baez and the Japanese-American violinist Midori.

Those of us who grew up in the ’60s are a bit bemused to see the original “counter culture” woman, Joan Baez, receiving an award from the federal government! Bravo to them all!
Jane Fonda getting it would be more surprising.
Midori and I first met when she was 14 years old and she appeared as soloist with the St. Louis Symphony. She then toured Japan and Hong Kong with the St. Louis Symphony, conducted by, then music director, Leonard Slatkin.
Since that time I have worked with her in Minnesota , Louisville and , on one occasion, judged for her Foundation.
In addition to being a great artist, she is the hardest working person in the performing arts that I have ever known.
Congratulations to her as the honor is well deserved.
