Clearly less important than the shirt.

  • MusicBear88 says:

Is a conductor wearing a tacky shirt really newsworthy?

  • A.L. says:

The shirt looks like a handmedown from the Netrebkos.

  • Gustavo says:

…and not for Bertrand de Billy.

  • musician says:

LOL Norman, good one. Yannick is a medicore clown.

    • gfg says:

He may be a clown but he can probably spell better than you can.

    • J Barcelo says:

It seems to be a sport to disparage YNS. Why? He’s young? Gay? I don’t get it. He’s made some terrific recordings with Philly. The new Rach 1 is superb – one of the best. I’ve really been pleased with his Mendelssohn, Schumann, Rachmaninoff, and Schmitt among others. YNS is a fine musician who paid his dues; he’s one of the brightest young conductors we have.
The shirt is stylish and you’re a mediocre speller, btw.

      • Barry says:

I’ve pointed out how ridiculously gratuitous some of the slamming of Yannick is on here, both by Norman and various posters. I would think it’s a combination of class warriors and musicians who have axes to grind or are ideologically driven.

        • Tom Phillips says:

It’s also due to this site’s unending hatred and contempt for virtually ANYONE AND ANYTHING associated with the Met and lately the city of New York in general.

    • Bill says:

Hopefully you play better than you spell or type!

    • CSOA Insider says:

I know a Renowned Maestro who, in the presence of his inner circle, routinely makes homophobic jokes with YNS as one of the frequent targets.

The Renowned Maestro is considered by many a “class act”.

Beyond the facade and the fashion choices, who is the cheap, mediocre clown?

  • Sir David Geffen-Hall says:

    No. Just No.

  • Michaela K. says:

Oh my…do we need another mask on a frontcover!!!!…how bright the future seems…

  • Tiredofitall says:

That man needs a(nother) gay man to dress him. As Callas said in “Masterclass” – “You need a look. Get one.”

    • Orchestra man says:

He does! His other half is a gay man….. they spend more of tacky expensive labels than the Met orchestra have been paid this last year. Money cannot buy taste or style.

  • Robin Mitchell-Boyask says:

And it looks like he’s kept the silly blonde dye job. Sometimes I worry he enjoys too much being a celebrity. What’s terrifying for those who love this orchestra is that it has staked its future 100% on him.

  • Robin Mitchell-Boyask says:

And the penny just dropped that someone in the PO admin has leaked this image to Norman.

  • Greg Bottini says:

    I like that shirt, actually.

    • Marfisa says:

      I agree with you, Greg!

      • Flora Jones says:

Agreed. He has his own sense of style that isn’t limited to tails, a tux, or a nehru jacket. And naturally, there is a whole world of fashion out there, a lot bigger than the classical music world.

    • John Kelly says:

I like that conductor too………..a wonderful Parsifal at the Met a bit ago and a really superb Carmelites. Half the people on SD are deaf, I am certain of it. Who cares what they look like……try LISTENING

  • HugoPreuss says:

Apparently, the shirt is important enough for this site to devote a post to it…

  • CA says:

Ridiculous. Cheap. Pandering. Embarrassing. (My opinion).

  • Woke says:

Not as silly as his hair.

  • Monsoon says:

Not as silly as the Nehru jackets that most conductors wear now. It makes them look like a Sean Connery-era Bond villain.

It’s also time to ditch the tux with tails. It’s anachronistic, and sends the wrong message to first time concertgoers.

    • John Kelly says:

Agreed. They can come out looking as ridiculous as “Kennedy” for all I care, as long as they are exciting and have something to say about the music. That’s a rarity nowadays. Eccentric point making is in vogue. These conductors all need to buy a bunch of Charles Munch recordings to see what conducting is all about………….

  • Novagerio says:

Maazel had “crazy shirts” too in his Cleveland years.
    I think I’ll stick to the music…

  • jt says:

    What’s your deal?
