The Beethoven statue in Bonn, inaugurated by Franz Liszt in 1845, is to receive state aid for massive reconstruction to its base.

Apparently, it is suffering from ‘war damage’.

Must be the dngerous British variant finally kicking in.

  • Rogerio says:

Before they fix it, it would be a good idea to check if Beethoven was a slave-owner or otherwise showed support for slavery …
Or if he ever treated women as anything other than as the equals of men…
Is there evidence he showed respect and admiration for native African classical music…?
Because … you know what we do to statues.

    • The View from America says:

Yes, it would be a shameful waste of resources to spend money on repairing the base of a statue that will be removed within a couple of years.

    • John Borstlap says:

B’s chances of woke survival are slim: he treated his housekeepers in a terrible way, on one occasion even throwing a dish back to her when she served it while he was talking to a visitor.

But as a compensation factor it can be argued that he spared the female species his torrentious moods by never marrying, and forgetting to send-off his ‘letter to the faraway beloved’. Such noble restraint should be taken into consideration.

  • Wiki: “…The [unveiling festival] banquet was disrupted by the behaviour of Lola Montez, who danced on a table and embarrassed Liszt by insisting she was his guest at the celebrations and demanding a seat appropriate to her claimed status, thus upsetting a pre-organised seating arrangement. This scandalised the Bonn authorities, and it rebounded on Liszt himself, so much so that when Beethoven’s centenary was celebrated in Bonn in 1870, he was not invited to attend.”

    • John Borstlap says:

      Great story.

Another aspect of that occasion: when the statue got unveiled, it stood with its back to the audiences and officials.
