mainCalixto Bieito’s battered production, due to air next week, has lost its Micaela, Olga Kulchynska.
She will be replaced by Vera-Lotte Boecker.
The show has already lost its original Don José and been postponed when the title-role mezzo fell sick with Covid.
Some casts are just not meant to be.

This is not just the luck of the draw: this is directly do to the recklessness of trying to produce large operas during a deadly global pandemic. As has widely been reported in the Vienna media, the wearing of masks in rehearsals was not enforced, and the team relied on rapid tests, which often only show a positive result after a person has already been infectious*. Then the Staatsoper tried to downplay the extent of the outbreak, including withholding information from the Vienna Philharmonic. Bogdan Roščić should be personally held responsible for these decisions– complain all you want about Peter Gelb, nobody is in the hospital with Covid because of his ego.
*this is exactly what happened at the White House when Trump contracted Covid. Will these morons ever learn.

Very excited to hear Miss Boecker sing Michaela! However the Staatsoper needs to be held accountable for their recklessness. Having several singers in the same production contract covid is not mere coincidence.
Ms Boecker is an artist in the ensemble in Vienna and is due to sing Micaela in the same production in Vienna in May/June, so an easy and obvious solution all round.
