DG hires Berlin Phil’s Digi man
mainDeutsche Grammophon has appointed Robert Zimmermann Vice President Consumer Business, starting this week.
He was formerly Managing Director of Berlin Phil Media GmbH, where he co-created the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Digital Concert Hall.
He will be in charge of DG’s expanding live broadcasts.
Bring me vinyl!
Congrats! I’m a big Dig Con Hall addict, so it’s great to see you spreading (spinning!) more joy!
Robert is truly one of the best when it comes to digital media and a lovely person too. Lucky DG!
Seems DG is serious about their live broadcasts. But a live broadcast is never the same when it is played back later at will. (what their platform DG Stage is for) That’s just a lukewarm replay of a live performance. Interesting for exceptional performances, those “once in a decade concerts”. But for the majority of live recordings, their excitement factor is expired the day after.
Much better then to have a real studio recording. Where the artists knew they can risk and try everything. Sad that DG doesn’t understand – anymore – even the basics of what a recording is and can be. You can tell how they market their products. Zero belief in a good recording as a product.
Not sure if this makes sense. The Berlin Philharmonics are heavlily subsidised and the digital concert hall was built under this conditions.
Video poductions are very expensive and I don’t see that there is a profitable business in video streaming, especially with all the competition on YouTube, Arte, ARD etc.. Unless you are out for milking public subsidies, I don’t see this as a business model with prospect.
