“Cosi” is a rarity, an ensemble opera, with the six principal singers combining and re-combining into duets, trios, quartets, and sextets, with a stellar aria or two. I don’t remembr a quintet in it.
It’s the only un-Balkan opera with two Albanians, even if they are pretenders. Karajan’s earlier recording with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and others is elegant, Boem’s also. Eleanor Steber made a second career with the big aria and some help from Bruno Walter.
