And it has been sobering to compare Vienna’s dignified videography style with the Metropolitan Opera’s highly interventionist approach. In Vienna, the camera rarely moves and cuts between cameras are infrequent. So you feel like you are watching as you would if you were there in person.
At the Met, the manipulations are almost incessant and highly distracting. Cut! Zoom in! Cut! Zoom out! Cut! Track left! Cut! Track right! Cut to close-up! Cut to wide shot! Cut! Cut! Cut! Zoom-dolly-track-cut! Many an otherwise fine stage presentation has been ruined (for me) by excessive MTV-style video manipulation that goes against the grain of the music. Ensemble singing and ballet sequences irrationally broken up for the sake of some gee-whiz but inappropriate “effect”. I recall one ridiculous instance in which I began to notice the camera cuts were coming every eight beats (I counted along), and I could predict the next unnecessary cut to the precise moment. To what purpose this hyperactive manipulation? With every cut, your eye must adjust to the new image and refocus your attention. Akhnaten was destroyed by a particularly choppy visual style appropriate to the shower scene in Psycho but hopeless antithetical to Phillip Glass’s mesmerizing music (although the Hymn to the Sun was mercifully allowed to proceed unmolested). The Met’s older broadcasts from the 70s didn’t do this stuff, and they are far more effective.
Bravo Vienna! Don’t succumb!!
