Comic violin duo are muted by mystery illness
mainThe wildly popular Twoset Violin – 2 million subscribers and rising – have called an indefinite break after Brett Yang was hospitalised with an unspecified but not life-threatening condition.
‘It is just uncertain at this point how long it will take for us to return,’ said his partner Eddy Chen.
My very best wishes to Mr. Yang – whether TwoSet is your brand of comedy or not, they are exposing Classical Music to millions and millions of young people in a fun, accessible, and earnest way. I hope that Brett recovers fully and that they are back at it soon.
Get well Brett! You guys are funny the serious way!
I don’t like their work, but of course they have my respect. Best wishes for both of them.
I love their work. Get well Brett !! Best wishes for both of you.
I got seriously hooked on twoset violin – I loved the variety, from the goofy anarchic to the informative and serious. And without them I would never have heard Widmann’s wonderful viola concerto with Antoine Tamestit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5WraTt_l_U&feature=emb_title). Get well fast, Brett, we need you.
Who takes that ridiculous, pretentious piece with its crazy and feeble theatricals seriously? Old fogey’s stuff from the sixties, imitated by youngsters with nostalgia for postwar ‘disruption’.
In comparison, the entirely unpretentious youngster stuff of TwoSet is totally authentic, fun, and much suited to young people:

It is always so nice to read these nuanced, gracious, and generous assessments of the work of fellow composers, who happen to write in a different style. Esp. if said colleagues are, arguably, more successful.
With some people, lack of arguments, ideas, understanding, etc. etc. always leads to attack on the bringer of Good News, in the hope he/she will get hurt, and will withdraw in a corner, sulking. The worst that can happen is an unrecognized balloon being plopped by someone else….. shameful!
“Old fogey’s stuff …” – I’m very tempted, but I’ll resist.
I know the feeling!!
Sally
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to a talented comedian and violinist.
It’s what you get for practicing 27 hours a day. Get well soon! Taiwan is proud of you.
get well soon – we need you both!
They are a really doing amazing work. Sometimes they are goofy, but they always take the music seriously. I love for example their masterclass with child prodigy Chloe Chua, and how they get really specific about bowing, positions and so on. Or the video with soprano Sanna Iljin and how she introduces them to great opera moments.
Or ‘If Philip Glass was a film’, my personal favorite. Or the one where they went to China to learn to play the erhu. Or almost any with the luthier Olaf. I never expected to find so many TwoSet admirers on this blogsite. LingLing 40 hours forever!
They are both marvellous. Best wishes to Brett for a speedy recovery.
I see so many videos of great performances (and not just strings either) where there’s a flood of “I’m here from TwoSet” comments. They’ve had Hilary Hahn on stage with them and she has no pretensions whatsoever; she even sat and ate Thai food with them on camera for an hour and a half and just chatted about being a musician at that level and what it’s like. And much like Victor Borge, when they aren’t joking around, they have chops. I wish them both the very best.
I don’t know that I would have ever heard of the great violinist David Nadien, if not for Two Set. Get well soon, Brett.
Brett and eddy were always making fun of other instruments anyways. Eddy kinda deserved it
He deserves to get sick because of his opinion? You may disagree, that is your right. But to say he deserves it??? Nobody deserves it!
You may not like / understand their humour, but being happy that Brett has serious health issues is really messed up.
Nobody “deserves” to be sick, you should be ashamed of yourself for writing such a comment.
My 15 year old son is a pianist and violinist – I introduced him to TwoSet and he absolutely loves them.
These guys are seriously good at engaging both young and er, middle-aged like myself …
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Brett.
It’s not a mystery. It’s private. There’s a difference.
Can’t stand them, couldn’t care less. If they never come back everything will remain absolutely the same as it was before they were noticed. And stop with the nonsense ‘they help spread classical music…’ the absolute majority of their fans are music students and amateur adult music lovers. The kind that still refers to pieces as ‘that song’. Ugh…2 million fans…pshaw! Many more voted to leave the EU. Numbers mean absolutely nothing these days. I’m sure the Kardashians have a billion followers. Does it validate their idiocy?
You certainly deserve an upvote for pshaw!
The Kardashians don’t collaborate with world-class soloists, weren’t invited by the Menuhin Competition team, and didn’t make the cover of The Strad magazine.
You don’t like them ? That’s OK, to each his own. But there really is no need for so much toxicity and negativity, especially when the article you reply to is about someone having serious health issues.
Well, I’m one of those fans who are not classically engage with music but thanks to twoset I am enjoying it now.
What relates to you or to others doesn’t mean it applies to anybody. Adios! (^_^)
Like Victor Borge, they are accomplished and skilled musicians who know what they’re talking – or kidding about. And they are funny. Their humor combines an arcane mix of Chinese cultural heritage and Aussie sensibility.
I’m too old by far to be visiting YouTube on a regular basis (!) but, as a classical music lover, TwoSet have kept me going back there with their likeable silliness, their violin knowledge and skills, and their obvious love of music. Plus, they seem like genuinely nice guys. I’m so glad that Brett is now returning to health and I wish them both well for the future.
I’m hooked on two-set. Best wishes to Brett for a full recovery. And Crikey Bro. . .watch your health and get your rest!!!
