Plexiglass is used for its sound dampening and absorption characteristics. It’s also great for sound technicians managing the mix. My other woodwind & brass colleagues also appreciate them as a deterrent. A wayward viola player looking for a rehearsal order, pencil, etc, is bound to stumble through the brass, woodwinds, and percussion sections. Are you in good hands?
They also don’t help reduce decibel levels, but don’t tell that to any bassoon or viola players.

Be that as it may — and now that I’ve read it on the internet, it must be true — they still reduce the physical pain caused by the sound of trumpets & trombones aimed in one’s direction, both during and after rehearsal.

That has been well known since the Pence – Harris debate where medical experts called the plexiglass barrier that the democrats insisted an a joke. Everyone should just wear a hazmat suit.

Princeton is basically a community college. I would trust reports like this from reputable outfits like USA Today, but not this alleged NJ.com.
Until then orchestras either need to keep their musicians as far apart as possible or, better yet, cease performing entirely.
