The new Dutch chief of the Vienna Volksoper, Lotte de Beer, has named Omer Meir Wellber as her music director, starting in 2022, it has just been confirmed

Wellber, 39, is presently chief conductor of the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester and music director of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

Something may have to give.

    No more Wagner!

  • Not that unusual….thinking of Pereira who used to daven with Schicoff

    horrible .. another job for this dilletant .. swaggerer without taste and knowledge

  • Tamino says:

    He is getting a bit over stretched. Maybe post Brexit the incentive to work with the BBC and that backward tribe on the islands dwindels?

    • Symphony musician says:

      Tamino, I’m totally against Brexit but I have to take exception to your phrase “that backward tribe”. Never give in to the temptation to make crass, derogatory generalisations about large groups of diverse individuals. Your comment is reminiscent of what the people running empires sometimes used to say about those whose lives they were controlling. It was wrong and it shouldn’t have been acceptable then. It’s even more wrong and even more unacceptable now. An apology would be appreciated.

      • Tamino says:

        You are right. It was a comment made tongue in cheek about that majority, and these I call rightfully backward, who voted for Britain to leave the EU, on delusional promises and dreams of past grandeur. A very sad story of mass delusion that creates misery for all. We had a few of those mental aberrations with all these damn backward tribes all over Europe, sorry again. 😉

    package deal. bad+worse.

  • Martinu says:

    Another Israeli, Asher Fisch, had been the chief conductor of the Volksoper before, in the nineties.
