What if a countertenor won American TV’s hottest talent show?
mainIt could be about to happen.
John Holiday, 35, has reached the finals of NBC’s The Voice. Earlier this year, he was singing Orpheus at LA Opera.
“If my music can bring somebody a little hope, a little joy,” he said. “If I can bring someone out of being depressed during this difficult time or help them if they’re grieving, if I can remind one person to lean into their uniqueness in those few minutes I’m on TV, then I’ve done my job.”
It’s a rigged show, freezing out superiorly talented viola players.
Superior to what, a garbage bin filled with half-eaten pizza crusts?
Leaving aside viola jokes (if it was one), and given that this clip is probably not to everyone’s taste (nor mine), he has a beautiful pure voice and a refreshingly unfussy style in more typical countertenor repertoire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6MJJrJap8w
I enjoy these times, when countertenors can be superstars (Fagioli, Orlinski, Jaroussky, Cencic). It is a long way since Alfred Deller.
