Covid strikes Hong Kong Academy
mainThe Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts has been shut down after a student was hospitalised with Covid-19. The student is said to be a pianist from Hong Kong.
Foreign students are furious that the Academy director Adrian Walter required them to return for an extended final term, or be failed for the entire year.
Walter seems always t have been a bit of a tyrant.
I loved the HKAPA and spent a lot of time there when I lived in HK and when I revisited. It had — probably has — a wonderful theatre, much better than the main stage at the Cultural Centre, at least from an audience point of view. (And is a much more attractive building). And it had the best burgers in HK in its airy top floor restaurant!
And a great deal of good was coming out of it — talented musicians emerging all the time.
This demand from Walter flies in the face of reality. Poor old HK — it’s really getting it from all sides these days. When I lived there — in the late 80s, including during Tiananmen Square, when millions were on the streets every night, and I with them, it was probably the safest place I had ever lived.
Having worked with Adrian Walter in the past the one thing you could never accuse him of is being a tyrant…in fact he’s so far from being a tyrant it’s not funny! Not sure what the full story is here, but Genghis Khan he ain’t!
Yes, well, the UK was in charge of Hong Kong then. Might have something to do with the situation being a bit different now with regard to safety in the streets and what not.
Sure you aren’t remembering the HK Arts Centre, directly across Fenwick St from the Academy?
Quite sure.
One student falls ill – let’s all freak out and shutter the whole school!
The extent to which Coronaparanoia is devastating the world is mind-boggling. One weeps for the future of a world run by snowflakes.
