New York Philharmonic writes off its summer
mainThe NY Phil last night formally abandoned its summer concerts in the parks of five boroughs, together with performances in China as part of the Shanghai Orchestra Academy and Partnership and its residency at Bravo! Vail Music Festival in Colorado.
All gone.
They should cancel until 2035 until aliens will give us a vaccine to the virus.
Luckily I have my record collection because any the NY Phil’s musicians today are not even close to the ones in 1920.
Real nice attitude. Why don’t you do the world a favor and stick a cactus up your @$$?
Yes they are but most are better.
Correct, there will be little practical way to get the usual NYPhil routine into a workable state given the existing condition of NYC.
You are right thank goodness i have my large cd/vinyl collection
I can listen to the legends in the comfort of my home. toscannini. Walter. Kleiber etc
Will the pandemic be the nail in the coffin of classical music?
Quite possible. But it depends upon two things: 1) the willingness of society to support the art form; 2) the willingness of its practitioners to reconsider its real meaning within the context of the modern world. Merely picking-up where it left-off will not do.
I think you forgot to mention something about your record collection at home and that you are eating microwaved meals until a vaccine becomes available.
Just saying.
True.
I think classical music will continue i worked with people who go to concerts
And follow jazz and rock/folk music. Like myself
Damn it! This was going to be the Resurrection summer, too. The Mahler 2nd was going to be performed at this month’s Mahler Fest 2020 in Boulder – cancelled. Then Vail – cancelled. Grand Teton Music Festival has it lined up – probably the next to go. What a shame.
Makes you wonder about the long term prospects of those currently attending conservatories – not to mention the point of even attending them at all now…..
Many will still be able to take full advantage of that experience as long as it’s undertaken from a position of financial security, with full knowledge that it will never be actualized in any professional setting after school.
Goodness, throw in the towel at the first sign of adversity in life?
In view of current events, this is hardly surprising.
I hope The Messiah concert will be performed this Winter
I’m no Pollyanna by nature, but I wonder at the evidence of so much defeatism here. Perhaps the outcome of lockdown will be a more willing dependency on screens, for everything from ordering food and clothes to taking one’s entertainments, whether low or high arts.
But it may equally drive people starved of the casual intercourses of life for so long back to high streets and shops and restaurants — and concert halls as well as arenas and stadia.
Oh, they won’t play in China? What a pity…
I have been going to nyphil as a subscriber for the last twelve years seeing Saturday matinee and will be back again. We will endure…! We will continue….! We are New York City…!
Former attendees will be able to replay all of Trump’s excuses like: “It’s nothing”; “It will go away soon all by itself”; “Who needs a vaccine”; “it will be gone by April”; “Obama left the cupboard bare of materials to fight the virus”; etc. along with their Bozo the clown replays.
