My Wigmore Hall debut is sadly postponed

March 30, 2020

I was down to give a recital on the theme of Genius and Anxiety with pianist Paul C K Wee on May 20.

Unhappily, this has just landed:

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Wigmore Hall will be closed for the remainder of the 2019/20 Season, until 31 July 2020.

We are very sorry to announce therefore that all concerts and events until this date are postponed.

If the situation improves faster than anticipated, we will re-evaluate our plans and salvage what we can of the latter part of the current planned season in July.

Until then, please do browse our extensive catalogue of past live streams, podcasts and Wigmore Hall Live releases, which includes many wonderful concerts, masterclasses and talks: wigmore-hall.org.uk/watch-listen

Norman, I think you have a responsibility here. If you received this email, think of how many artists (or their managers did as well).

Such a shame that someone might have just learned about their concert being cancelled not through the official routes.

You condemned other organisations for this just days ago.

Have some common sense and take some responsibility for your output and how this might affect those who are struggling the most in our industry right now – artists.

This information is being shared simultaneously by the Wigmore Hall and will appear on their website at noon.

  • RW2013 says:

What would Mr. Wee have played?

  • yujafan says:

I have seen you at Wigmore fairly often over the years, Norman, so am a little surprise this would have been your debut.

  • Steven Holloway says:

Your’re, um, recital cancelled?? A sad bit of news indeed. My tiny heart is broken. Life will never be the same.

  • Joel A Stein says:

Why the sarcasm? Can’t he be disappointed?

  • Hal Sacks says:

I expect an announcement on the Proms season cancellation momentarily.

    • Saxon Broken says:

      Er…not too likely.

The pandemic will likely blow out in 3-4 months (e.g. mid July). The Proms could always run with just the London orchestras, and they could get it up and running in days if they had to since the hall is already hired. They really don’t need to decide anything at the moment.

  • Peter Burch says:

You’ll be more than worth the wait, Norman!

  • John Borstlap says:

Very sad… but fortunately, a book can always be bought and read, independently of worldly crises.
