Historically and culturally, violin is closely associated with the music of Ashkenazi Jews (“Cellist on the Roof”’just doesn’t have the same ring to it) which is why it is the most appropriate instrument for the context of that movie, but in purely musical terms all those pieces from John Williams’ soundtrack can certainly be quite effective if played by a fine cellist.
Hauser
I agree. It always struck me as a bit vapid on the violin, and I heard it by quite a few of the major practitioners — they all seem to have wanted to record or perform it. The cello gives it a bit more colour, especially the darkness and pathos the story requires.
It will be interesting to see if some of the top cellists pick up on it the way the violinists flocked to it.

May my tongue cling to my palate, if I do not remember you, if I do not bring up Jerusalem at the beginning of my joy.
Beautiful, Steven and Joseph. One might wonder why this took so long to happen. I too, believe it will catch on. Hauntingly stokes the embers of the heart.

Listen to Hauser and Sulic (2Cellos) for an awesome rendition!
Floating around somewhere on the internet you will find this recorded years ago by Timothy Landauer,
principal cellist of the Pacific Symphony in California. Timothy died last spring. He was a wonderful cellist and, even more important, a wonderful human being.
I really like this version. It works well on cello.
