Dubai loses opera boss
mainJasper Hope has left his job as CEO of Dubai Opera.
Hope, former head of London’s Royal Albert Hall and brother of violinist Daniel Hope, lasted just three years.
No reason given on either side, but we hear staff members lined the backstage corridors to give him an impromtu ovation the night he left.
Most of these Middle Eastern countries have appalling records in Human Rights… why anyone with any regard for Human Rights and fellow human beings would want to work or perform in these countries beats me… oops, yes, I just remembered… they do it not for Art but for MONEY !
Yes… because the U.S. (for example) is a great reference for human rights policies. How could anyone possibly accept making music there?! Hypocrite argument.
The Oman is ok. The Sultan is a gay, organ playing anglophile.
You are obviously not writing that from Oman.
A typical view of the underemployed.
Yep, it always amazes me what money can buy…
No idea why it’s called Dubai Opera when the only appearance of that genre between now and April 2020 is three performances of La Traviata, memorably described in this urgent résumé, possibly penned by Sir Neville Cardus himself:
Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata is one of the cornerstones of the operatic repertory, and remains a favourite for singers and listeners alike. This iconic opera, by the National Opera of Ukraine named after Taras Shevchenko, features a score filled with incredible melodies, and some of the most difficult arias in the soprano repertoire. With a tense plot and vivid characters paired with Verdi’s perfectly attuned music there won’t be a dry eye in the house. La Traviata is also, most famously, the opera that Richard Gere takes Julia Roberts to see in Pretty Woman.
That’s a libellous comment, easy to make from the safety of your nom de plume but certainly most not true and most unfair. Jasper Hope did a pretty good job in opening the Dubai Opera and programming it over the past three years.
