Sicklist: Mariss Jansons is out

Conductor emeritus Mariss Jansons has had to cancel the concerts with the Concertgebouworkest on 18 and 19 September in Amsterdam and on 21 September in Bucharest due to health reasons.
The Romanian conductor Cristian Măcelaru will take over the programme unchanged… Măcelaru is Chief Conductor of the WDR Sinfonieorchester in Cologne.
Previously, Janine Jansen pulled out of another season-opening concert.
Unlike Berlin Philharmonic, this orchestra is not always very good in replacements (but they are not quite Berlin Philharmonic either, in spite of that ridiculous survey result some years ago as the world’s greatest orchestra). I remember less than a satisfactory replacement for Kirill Petrenko two or three years ago, who received the usual/compulsory standing ovation in Amsterdam, which may puzzle the new comers to this otherwise delightful city. This time it seems like a good replacement. In any case they will get a standing ovation at the end.

Mine – the RCO and Philly are the two best blended ensembles in the business judging from their Carnegie appearances through the years.

Maestro Jansons is one of the most engaging, dedicated and professional musicians of our time. The BRSO is very lucky to have him. He has been very ill recently, and he isn’t the type of musician to lie about his health.
Exactly. Jansons has both a family and a personal history of heart problems, and almost died of a heart attack in 1996 while conducting La Boheme. He is very brave to keep going and we should be grateful for that. He is the last person to be suspected of cancelling at a whim.
A wonderful man and great inspiration to those of us who love music.

The Concertgebouw’s current problems of a series of cancellations illustrate perfectly the consequences of a bad and hasty decision by management to fire Gatti for reasons it later could not avow in the face of litigation.
If only the Board could hire guest CEOs.

No. Gatti agreed to “get lost”. The press release was just a polite formula to save Gatti further embarrassment. Gatti knew his case was hopeless.
Jonas Jansons
The man has a history of heart problems for which he has a pacemaker. His passion and commitment to his art are unquestioned. Give him a proverbial break.

Janine Jansen did not pull out of the same concert. She cancelled a concert tonight whereas the Jansons concerts are next week.
Macelaru is really really good. By far the best assistant Philadelphia has had and he’s gained increasing attention elsewhere. I’ve preferred his Philadelphia sound to Yannick’s. Big break was some high profile subs for Boulez when the latter’s health was declining.
Not the same concert. Jansen was supposed to play last night, Jansons was supposed to conduct next week.
This was not the same concert Janine pulled out of.
That doesn’t look well. He canceled the entire summer tour with BRSO and was about to come back in September to conduct Concertgebouw and the season-opening in Munich. It seems that he hasn’t recovered yet, even given a long time, and it must be something serious. Let’s hope he can make it for Munich!
Also bad luck for Concertgebouw, basically first couple weeks of their new season is all cancelations. Welser-Möst, then Jansen, and now Jansons. Maybe that’s a curse for firing Gatti…
