Ion Marin will be rather more flamboyant than Temirkanov, that is for sure.
Are you sure? I guess you haven’t seen Temirkanov conduct the finale of Shostakovich 6th Symphony…
Once again we are left to ponder why someone at this age does not retire rather than commit and then cancel?
Money
He’s 80, young for a conductor. I recently heard a fine concert from him. Haitink just retired, at 90. I wouldn’t have wanted to miss out on the last 10 years of extraordinary concerts I have heard from him.
Haitink was always a big bore. He really should have retired earlier.
Because they are amazing musicians, still able to create magic when on the podium, perhaps?
Haitinck just retired at 90 in fairly good health.
With rare exceptions, successful conductors do not retire before they are no longer physically able to appear on stage. However, in most cases the main reason for this is probably not the money but the most potent drug of all – power.
Ion Marin is a genial conductor.
And he’s native Romanian but Austrian citizen.
Because in better health Temirkaniv is one of the greats and could still have so much to give us. Just think what the 90 year old Haitink has done this year – and Dohnanyi, 90, has bounced back too. Long may Yuri continue!
Sure it’s not Sir Michael Gambon meeting Paavo Järvi?
You need glasses – he looks nothing like Gambon
He’s still listed as conducting the opening season concert in St Petersburg two weeks from today – I have a ticket for that concert, so I hope he’ll be there.
I played with T three times in the 80’s. When he wasn’t drinking, he could be inspired.
Not to disparage Temirkanov in the least, but Ion Marin is a wonderful conductor.
May YT regain his good health quickly, and may IM find great success as his replacement!
