Mariss Jansons is unwell.

The Salzburg Festival regrets to announce that Mariss Jansons has been advised by his doctors to take a break for regeneration, forcing him to cancel his concerts at this summer’s Salzburg Festival. We send the conductor and recipient of the Festival Brooch with Rubies our very best wishes for a speedy recuperation.

Fortunately, Yannick Nézet-Séguin has agreed to take over the two concerts on 2 and 4 August 2019.

On 4 August, Maestro Nézet-Séguin will conduct the programme as previously published. On 2 August, instead of the Symphony No. 10 in E minor by Dmitri Shostakovich, he will lead the orchestra in the composer’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor.

He will also be replaced by Yannick in two BBC Proms.

Susanna Mälkki will cover for him with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Riga Jurmala Music Festival.

  • Patrick says:

I hope he recovers soon. He did not look too well during his recent VPO concerts …

  • Edgar says:

Maris Janssons’ heart, I assume? Let’s hope the prescribed physician remedy, a regenerative break, will lead not only to full regeneration, but also to the much needed balanced activity which benefits both the maestro’s health and artistry – in that order. The human body doesn’t lie.

Meanwhile, Yannick and Susanna will step in, as they still young and vigorous enough for the multi-location life of today’s peripatetic conductors. Until they, too, need a break.

    Go figure.

    • Herr Doktor says:

His heart disease problems have been well-documented publicly. I’ve heard him live twice and both concerts were tremendous, once with the Pittsburgh Orchestra, and the other with the Concertgebouw.

The sad thing in all of this is that neither he nor his doctors know that the effective clinical cure for coronary artery disease actually exists and produces spectacular clinical results, yet for the lack of the right funding has been stuck in limbo even though the data and evidence is completely unambiguous. It’s roughly 5 years away at this point.

      • Keith says:

I’m a fan of the maestro and I hope he recovers quickly.
I also have CAD and I’m very interested in knowing more about the “clinical cure” you mentioned. Where or how can I obtain more information?

        • Anson says:

Seriously. It’s the leading cause of death in the US and the world. The idea that a “cure” is being hidden from the public is a bit far-fetched, to say the least. What is it you’re referring to, Herr Dok?

        • Herr Doktor says:

Keith, this will not be available to you or others until FDA approval, which is approximately 5 years out. Until then, you and others will have to wait. But you can be aware that there is something on the horizon that is likely going to have a real impact.

Anson, I appreciate your cynicism. However, you have no idea what is going on nor is this in the public domain, so the best I can say to you is be patient.

  • Tamino says:

He really should stop working and enjoy retirement. Obviously he needs to take of whatever health he still has. And maybe let younger colleagues have a chance.
Don‘t listen to the agents who only want your money, not your best.

  • msc says:

He does not look like a ruby brooch type of guy…. But seriously, I hope he looks after himself and wisely manages his work load.

  • Rob says:

He’s pushed himself over the edge. It’s time to retire. Go and walk in the Swiss Alps, enjoy life.

  • Rob says:

Saturn- the planet of restriction – the teacher of the zodiac is currently traversing Capricorn – Mariss’s birthsign. It’s time to stop or be stopped.
