Nikki Chooi, the Canadian violinist who shared concertmaster duties at the Met in 2016-17, has been named concertmaster at the Buffalo Philharmonic.

The post had been vacant for almost a year, since Dennis Kim departed.

“Nikki Chooi is an absolutely spectacular violinist and a consummate leader,” said BPO music director JoAnn Falletta. “The musicians and I are thrilled that he will be bringing his world-class talents to the Philharmonic.”

Sincerely expect that the MET’s loss is the BPO’s gain. Continue to hope that the community outside of Buffalo has an opportunity to attend a concert led by Ms. Falletta.

  • Tracey says:

    • CJ says:

Yes, Timothy has just won the 2nd prize at the Queen Elisabeth contest in Brussels, which was a surprise, because public and critics expected him to have the first prize.
(I am not saying that the first prize, Stella Chen, was not good, she was brillant, but Timothy had that “petit plus”).

  • Semra Bahcivan says:

Looks like Timothy Choi very talented violinist.

  • Freddynyc says:

Why on earth though would anyone want to live in Buffalo……? ‍♂️

    • Ed in Paris says:

It’s around the lake (Ontario) from Toronto.

    • John Russell says:

It’s a very SATISFYING community with educational and cultural institutions in abundance. Avant garde Art, Theatre, Jazz, and the Buffalo Phil.–with its excellent history. Housing is very affordable as are living costs.
Late 19th/early 20th century architecture and city streets and parks designed by Olmsted (NYC Central Park designer)There is also a lively and fast-growing Restaurant industry. Toronto is 1.5 hours away for even more culture.
…Niagara is one of the Wonders of the World, connecting two of the 5 Great Lakes and Canada right at Buffalo.
…and, if you happen to like Buffalo Wings–they’re HERE!

      • The View from America says:

… not to mention Rochester and the Eastman School 90 minutes to the east for even more culture. In North America, having three fine orchestras within a 90-minute drive (Buffalo, Toronto, Rochester) is rivaled only by the triumvirate of Philadelphia/Baltimore/DC.

    • Cynic, I admit says:

Maybe because you don’t live there…?

    • Bruce says:

Make sure you never go; that way you’ll never have to find out.

  • Luigi Nonono says:

It’s a lot colder than Philadelphia.

  • Anon says:

    Way to go Nikki!
