He appears to have died in his sleep.

I’m sorry to hear that. I once participated in a reading of a piece of his that he apparently abandoned.
It may have been respiratory failure. Anyone who has difficulty with sleeping should see a sleep doctor in case it is sleep apnea. Respiratory failure kills a lot of men early in their lives.
So sad. Such talent gone so soon.
He was much beloved by all – as a student, and later a colleague, I found him always thoughtful and kind. RIP

I knew David back in New York in the late 70s, when I was living on the upper west side. David lived in that area, too. I was a harpsichordist who formed a duo with guitarist Jerry Willard. For a couple of programs, I wrote a trio for harpsichord, guitar, and viola. I am not sure how I found David, but he ended up playing viola for us. We had a lot of crazy fun doing the programs. He was just a kid back then, even before his Columbia days. I was very saddened to hear about David’s passing. Very fine composer and a very nifty guy.
I remember him and his entire family from back in the 60s, in Berkeley. I shared with him and his two sisters the same piano teacher, Helen Svensen, who was like a mother to me. It was great to discover that he advanced far beyond me
