This is not surprising for on opening night she sounded like someone in the throes of a full fledged vocal crisis.
…or perhaps a cold?
Listen to these two horrors, from four months earlier. She sounded no better as Elektra. Perhaps she suffered a cold then too, yes?

Don’t be ridiculous. What the hell do you know. Cretin….
Behave.
Nice break for Sabine Hogrefe.
When will this winter’s flu end? It is straining hospitals and emergency rooms. My pharmacy could not keep Tamiflu in stock
Yes, it’s been a very bad here in England as well for people through all walks of life, and no singer escapes.
Except that Goerke’s problems are larger than the flu. Listen to these two horrors, from four months earlier. She sounded no better as Elektra.

Saw her last Friday night and her top voice sounded very pinched and fluttery.
She did not have gleaming high notes.
There’s a decent instrument in there somewhere. But with all the weight placed in the middle to make it louder and “dramatic,” the top has become a thread. It’s sad to heat from the house, but even sadder onstage. She seems a smart lady when I’ve been around there. I hope she’s smart enough to listen to her body and fix this and not simly be deluded by offers made and signed years ago when things were plummier.
I was there on the opening night of Elektra and also last Friday and I am afraid I did not hear all that pinching, from the first ringing Allein allein to the end she was in total command of the music
Then you probably never heard Nilsson, Rysanek, Jones, sound like laser beamsin the role.
Where are they performing this season? I’ll get my tickets at once.
I’ve heard it both on stage with her and in the theater. It’s getting pinchy and sad. I do hope she can fix it. She’s a nice person. But this season has been rough.
Heard her do Elektra at Carnegie Hall last year, and she was in tip-top shape. Out of the five Elektras I’ve heard live, she was the grand winner. I was also in the audience for her replacement the other night and, unfortunately, Yannick had to scale down the sound of the orchestra in order for the replacement to be heard throughout. It was particularly anti-climactic near the end. Not a good night at the opera.
Had the same experience Monday night. I was very disappointed not to hear Goerke, but excited at the prospect of encountering a new singer–it was not so great, however. Chrysothemis, on the other hand, knocked me out.
How do you reconcile those opinions with NY Times and Financial Times glowing reviews of Christine Goerke as Elektra this season at the Met?
