An example of female privilege
Yeah, there may be a publicity thing going on (Remember the violinist who was topless on her CD cover about 15 years ago?) but there is also a serious professional reason not to risk having the violin slip. Clothes should be practical and comfortable and one of positive things about feminism is that they are becoming more so for women (who sees real high heels any more?) As a nurse I cannot remember the last time I saw a nurse in a skirt uniform–we need pants and pockets!
That was Lara St. John and it was more like 20 years ago 🙂 One of the best Bach recordings I’ve heard, on any instrument. https://www.amazon.com/Bach-Violin-Lara-St-John/dp/B000003Y32/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1520132376&sr=1-2&keywords=lara+st.+john+bach
(Apparently she wasn’t really topless but was wearing a bra or bikini top with no shoulder straps.)
Predates Yuja.
What would ASM’s career be like without the heavily exclusive promotion & endorsement of von Karajan?
P.S. Did ASM ever performed with Bernstein?
Different for sure, as HvK gave her some sage advice about how to present herself. Compare her appearance in this film, with later years : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-4t0Tr-0MqY
Weissenberg was another Karajan discovery but he was already quite sorted out on that front.
Well, she certainly looks and dresses much more nicely now than then…
Norman, how is this bit of information relevant to music? Why don’t you critique ASM’s actual playing, style, and artistry? Which actually serious musician would care about her choices of clothes? This is supposed to be a blog about music, art, and the quality of both. Instead, readers are fed tabloid-type, redundant, trash, devoid of any actual connection to music making.
If you, as a serious music critic, the standard upholder of the industry, are happy with ASM, her playing and artistry, then please write an interesting piece about this.
If, on the other hand, you think she isn’t very good, then write this, explain and prove your point, and perhaps make a suggestion as to what can be improved (either in her playing or in the industry’s choice of artists).
If you disapprove of her concert attire, then also, please make your point, and point out why this is relevant to music making. Finally, if you think that ASM is a looker and she enhances art with her gowns, then make the point.
This type of piece has zero relevance to music and art.
It’s presentation, and on some level relevant. Part of the theatrical aspect if you like. Karajan and S. Richter in their different ways both had an astute sense of this.
I wonder if she ever performed the Terry Gilkyson number “The Bare Necessities” from Disney’s The Jungle Book?
