Duncan Ward’s website says that he comes from a non-musical family background. So almost certainly not. (Ward is in any case a very common name).

I met John Ward for the first time on the cricket field. He was playing for the Liverpool
Phil cricket team, and they had an annual match against my works team – circa 1953/55.
A lovely man. What a percussionist I was always fascinated by his playing, particularly
on side drum.
